This weekend I attended the Teaching and Learning Conference in Washington, DC. I'll be honest, the thought of dragging myself out of bed at 6:30 am to get to a day of conferences didn't sound as appealing as when I signed up earlier. I'm so glad I did.
My first speaker was Christopher Emdin, Teacher's College Columbia University. He was terrific and engaged the room with his theory of Reality Pedagogy. He's done TED talks as well. He had a book but it sold out, For the white folks who teach in the hood.. and the rest of ya'll too: Reality Pedagogy and Urban Education, available on Amazon. I also listened to Hope Street Group and Shelby County Schools in Tennessee. They have developed a Teacher Advisory Council. The panel shared how they constructed the panel and the superintendent (who everyone wanted to recruit for their school after hearing him) discussed their process and the benefits.
I visited Bedtime Math. If you haven't heard of them, get your parents involved! Its a great way to reinforce problem solving at home (www.bedtimemath.org) and its free. Thanks to Kleenslate for their sample of the white board with a handle. A great day!
